5 Things Gabe Is Excited About In The Music Category
Gabe LLanas
So while normal people may not have the same interests in music that I do it has still been a really good couple of weeks for music for me. A couple of things, because I don’t consume music quite the same way as a younger, much cooler person who watches videos on youTube or listens to things on the radio; something that came out a month ago may look like a new release to me, because I just had no fucking idea it was out. So as you are reading this and thinking to yourself, “Well yeah that album came out five weeks ago,” just remember I’m old, and haven’t been to a record store (do people even go to those anymore on new album day) in a very long time. Here we go. It should be noted that the music I listen to probably is NSFW and has a lot of “The Swears”.
5. Jidenna – The Chief
So if you watched the epic Netflix miniseries Luke Cage you know who Jidenna is. You saw him in Cottonmouth’s club singing his single Long Live The Chief (Episode 5 “Just To Get A Rep”). If you didn’t like him, it is because your crazy and have really bad taste in hip-hop. Having released a few singles The Chief is Jidenna’s first full lenth album and it has everything that I could have hoped for from him.
Stripped down and electronic beats that have a liltinc style that gives a power to Jidenna’s stacatto and segmented rhyme style. Partially taking his sound from a Ghanan/Nigerian musical genre called Highlife, it is peculiar in this new age of mumble rap and pop singers. Do yourself a favor, if you like that good shit like Tribe Called Quest or The Roots, give The Chief a listen.

4. Less Than Jake – Sound the Alarm
If you listen to the show, which I presume you do because you are reading this, you know that Jon and I are both really big fans of ska. One of the first third wave ska bands that I was introduced to in high school (by a really cute girl I might add) was Less Than Jake. Their album Pez Core is still one of my favorite albums of all time, and honestly is probably one of the few albums that I would actually consider “All Killer, No Filler”.
Their newest EP (at 7 songs in 20 minuets there is no way this could be considered anything else), brings the same energy and focused sound that you find on all of their albums. Great guitar and horn hooks, with the kind of on point lyrical content that seems to speak directly to me is what I look for in a Less Than Jake album, and this EP does the trick. Here’s hoping that it leads to a new full lenth.

3. All Them Witches – Sleeping Through the War
So this is the fourth album from Nashville Stoner/Doom/Psych band is yet another reinvention of their sound. While staying true to their doomy metal roots, it incorporates a lot more of the psychadelic and buzzy surf sound that was on their last album. As long as they keep making these kind of albums I’ll keep listening to them.
The best part is that the whole album is now streaming on Decibel before it comes out anywhere else so you can give this a listen right now…

2. Sleep – The Clarity
I don’t know if I missed it or something but Spotify posted in my New Release section a new song by grand masters of Stoner Metal Sleep called The Clarity. This the kind of blasting dronny amazingness that I always assume is going to happen when I see Sleep anywhere in my feed.
Looking around I see that the song came out in 2014, but who gives a fuck, it’s new to me so this has been in heavy (and I mean stoned out of my mind heavy fucking rotation).

1. Body Count – No Lives Matter
“They can’t fuck with us / Once we realize we are all on the same side,” ever since their debut album Body Count, I have loved Ice-T’s side project. Full of venom both political and personal, it is a perfect vent for a man who has made a carrer out of venting. This is just the first single from a new Body Count album that is going to come out at the end of March. There is a really good chance that when it comes out that you will hear about how hard it makes my Evil Dick when it comes out!
