TOTLB S16 Joe Casey Image Comics

We had the awesome opportunity to speak with Joe Casey from Image Comics while we were at Comic Con International 2018! Joe has been working on comic books for over 20 years, and he is a super interesting guy to speak with!! We had the pleasure of speaking to him about New Lieutenants of Metal and MCMLXXV during this interview!

Issue one of New Lieutenants of Metal hit comic book stores July 4th, of 2018! This is the “most kick ass head banging heroes ever assembled.” They are ready to strike down any threat that comes their way, and do it with a little “metal!” I don’t think that Casey is quite sure where he came up with this idea, but the ideas that come out of his brain are hilarious and worth the read!! With this book, we also discuss the fact that each issue will come with a soundtrack. We discuss where this idea came from, and what influences those soundtracks!

Issue one of MCMLXXV will come out September 12th, 2018! This book tells the story of Pamela Evans. By day she is what we might consider an average cab driver, serving the masses. By night, she turns in to Pamela Evans, “monster fighter.” Not only does she fight crime, she fights crime with an enchanted tire iron!! Not going to lie, that might be the coolest super powered weapon as of late!! If that description doesn’t sell the book for you, listen to the episode. Joe, again, not sure where the ideas come from, tells us a little bit about the book, and some of the ideas behind!!

Joe was great, and if you’ve been following his career at all, you know that you’re in for a crazy, wild, but great ride!!

TOTLB S11 Dennis Culver

We had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Image Comics creator, Dennis Culver. Dennis is the writer of the upcoming book from Image, Burnouts. Burnouts is rated M, and will debut on September 19th, 2018! Make sure you tell your local comic book store that you want it added to your pull, so they can order it!

Description of the book from Image – Writer DENNIS CULVER (E Is for Extinction) and artist GEOFFO (layout artist of Marvel Rising) team up for a new ongoing series that combines the paranoia of They Live with Stranger Things. To save their friends and families, a group of high school teenagers must fight off an attack on their town by a secret alien invasion… but they can only see the aliens if they’re completely wasted. The Burnouts are saving the world one puff at a time!

Did you read that right? They can ONLY “see the aliens if they’re completely wasted.” This conversation with Dennis is absolutely hilarious. Imagine the looks you would get when you try and save the earth from invading aliens, but nobody can see them PLUS you’re high!! Who the heck would believe that rag tag group of saviors? Well, listen to the interview, and read the book to find out! Dennis and Geoffo did a great job of coming up with something new and different. This book sounds like the hero book you’ve been looking for, that isn’t the same as everything else out there!

TOTLB S10 Pia Guerra

Thanks to Image Comics, we had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Pia Guerra! Pia has been creating for a very long time now, but burst onto the scene with her book, Y: The Last Man, with Brian K. Vaughan! She has worked on Doctor Who, Amazing Spiderman, The Simpsons, and much more! You can’t have an interview with THE Pia Guerra, without speaking a little bit about Y: The Last Man, especially since there was some movie news. But, we the main reason we were speaking was to speak about, “Me The People.”

Me The People will be released by Image Comics, and will come out on October 3rd, 2018. This book is a collection of some of the more recent editorial pictures, created by Pia! We get to speak to Pia about the “why’s” of this creation. She tells us about the anger that came out of the last election, and how she copes with it. Most of the listeners of our show, already know how we feel, but listening to Pia gives us a good feeling, that there are more people like us still out there!!

Speaking with Pia, hopefully you will remember that there are still ways that you can go out and ensure that your voice is heard. Don’t sit behind the computer, or sit in front of the TV and rant. Go out, and create. Make a sign, create a story, march, or any kind of other creative outlets that get your voice heard, and make you feel better. Marching, and creating, made Pia feel much better, in a time of RAGE!! Hopefully you’ll read her new book, coincidentally coming out right before the midterm elections, and you will decide to take action!!

TOTLB S09 Rob Guillory

Rob has now been on our show for the second time! He is such a nice, and chill guy!! In 2008 Guillory rose to fame, working on his, Image Comics book, New York Times Best-Seller, Chew! Born in Louisiana, he “started” his artist career at The University of Louisana! But of course, he really started his career years before, pre-college, drawing and doodling where/when he could.

For this interview, we will be speaking with Rob about his Image Comics book, Farmhand.

The last time we spoke with Rob, the only thing he could tell us, was the title of the comic book. Now we get to learn all about, what promises to be his next big hit! He was already around issue five when we spoke, but because it hadn’t been released yet, the details were scarce. Farmhand released on July 11th, 2018, to great reviews! Chase Magnett of Comicbook.com gave it a 5 out of 5 stars, and said “There is a real beating heart behind their story in addition to the many beating hearts found in the farm itself. ”

Farmhand is all about farmer, Jedidiah Jenkins. As with all of the awesome stories that Guillory tells, Jedidiah doesn’t grow corn, or soy, or onions. This farm is growing limbs!! If you lose a limb, just call Mr. Jenkins, and he will get you something new, farm to body! BUT, there is something growing underneath Jedidiah’s farm, that promises to uproot his life!! Do NOT miss out on this dark comedy by friend of the show, Rob Guillory. If you’re a fan of Rob’s, you already know the awesome dark humor he has, but if you don’t, this is something you should definitely be putting in your pull slot! Call your local comic book store now, and order it!!

Gravediggers Union Volume 1 – Wes Craig w., Toby Cypress a. – Image Comics

So one of my favorite comics currently going is Gravediggers Union is about to get their first trade, and Image has an amazing trailer. Image says:
“DEADLY CLASS co-creator Wes Craig teams up with artist Toby Cypress (Omega Men) to introduce you to the weird horror of THE GRAVEDIGGERS UNION, VOL.1 this May. The trade paperback collects issues #1-5 of the ongoing series.
In THE GRAVEDIGGERS UNION, VOL. 1, the supernatural world has gone berserk, and it’s all tied to a powerful cult called the Black Temple. They want to unleash ancient dark gods on mankind and bring about the apocalypse. The only things that stands in their way are Cole, Haley, and Ortiz. They’re members of the Gravediggers Union, a brotherhood sworn to defend the living from the undead. At the center of the Black Temple’s plan is a street kid named Morgan. She’s the key to the coming apocalypse. Also, she’s Cole’s estranged daughter. To find her, the Gravediggers will have to contend with a witch who hates their guts, a former cult member who used to be the world’s biggest movie star, yuppie vampires, steroid-zombies, junk golems…and no overtime pay.”
Be sure to pick this book up if you haven’t read them yet. They are fantastic. Check out the trailer too!

Bram Stoker’s Dracula – Mike Mignola – IDW

One of Mike Mignola’s lesser known works is about to get a reprint (which means I won’t have to keep hunting for issue number three to read the story). I for one can’t wait to get a hold of this book. An adaptation of the Gary Oldman film this is for sure a book that you are gonna want to check out if you like horror movies. From IDW:
“25 years ago one of comics’ most celebrated creators, Mike Mignola, adapted to comics, along with Roy Thomas, the star-studded Columbia Pictures (Sony Pictures Entertainment) film by Francis Ford Coppola, Dracula, based on the world-renowned novel by Bram Stoker. Now at last fans of this lost treasure will have a chance to relive the terror, or discover it for the first time, as IDW is bringing the complete story back to print!
“I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have this book back in print,” said artist Mike Mignola. “People have been asking about this one for ages—More than any other book of mine—and I honestly didn’t think it was ever going to be possible to see an edition, but here it is. Thank you Scott Dunbier and IDW. No idea how you did it but very glad you did. I’m generally not a fan of my older work (pretty huge understatement there) but I think this one holds up. Despite the fact that I was doing a movie adaptation (which has its own unique set of problems) I think there is some nice drawing and storytelling in here. One of the very few older jobs I’m still pretty proud of.”
The 136 page hardcover collection features Mignola’s stunning black and white artwork, and showcases the master creators’ final work before launching Hellboy.”
Mike Mignola may not like his older work, but I sure as hell do. Be sure to check this out when it comes out, I get the feeling that you will be pleased.
