Monday Floppy Copy – Superman Red Son

Hello, and welcome comrades. This week on a very special and somewhat Ukrainian edition of Floppy Copy, we discuss Superman… Red Son. That’s right fellow common worker and probably impoverished member of this socialist party, it is time to grab your Ushanka’s, and sharpen those sickles, that’s right fellow communists its hammer time.

Written in 2003, Mark Millar’s Elseworlds limited series is a 3 part What If story in which Superman is raised in a somewhat unfamiliar setting and time period. No longer american baby Kal-El, baby-El instead crash lands, and is raised in a Ukrainian collective farm. Socialist Super Power, Superman now takes the place of nuclear weapons as the major Cold War deterrent in the 1950’s as America scrambles to find and implement their contingency plan. Red Son spirals into all kinds of cool shit from here, Lex Luther enacting a plan 40+ years in the making alternate versions of DC favorites such as Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern, this story gives a detailed look at a different world and how our beloved Man of Steel conforms and confronts when raised inside.

I’ve tried writing more about Superman Red Son, but in the off chance some of you haven’t read it yet, I really don’t wanna spoil anything. Especially the ending, which I have exposed literally none of here. This is one of my all time favorite comic stories period and not Just Superman Stories either. What I love most about Mark Millar’s take on this “what if” story is that Superman’s main character attributes stay relatively unchanged here. This isn’t an entirely different character with major differences to why and how he’s does things. There are simply different motivations and surroundings for this Superman. Time, and a different cultural outlook on leadership and society do produce a difference, however but this Superman is still very recognizable to fans of the character.

So please do yourself a favor, give Jonthan Garnett a call at Hall of Justice Comics and Collectibles and get yourself a copy of this in either individual issues or trade and read this story. New Comics Release for June 7th 2017

New Comics Release for 6/7/17

Hello June! Man who else went and saw Wonder
Woman this weekend? How amazing was that movie? I loved it! Can’t wait to see
it again, and see more of her in Justice League later this year! It was a huge
week this week so lets jump right in to some of the more notable releases!
From DC this week, Dark Knight 3 Master Race
finally wraps up with issue #9. This is Earth’s last
stand. Quar’s Kryptonian Army has conquered the planet, but Batman and his
allies don’t believe the world is beyond saving. They’ll rally once more
against Quar and save the world or die trying. Wrapping up Brian Azarello and
Frank Miller’s tale with art by Andy Kubert, don’t miss the epic conclusion to
the must read saga!

From Image this week, Reborn #6 hits the
stands, wrapping up the mini series by Mark Millar with art and cover by Greg
Capullo. The action-packed
climax sees Bonnie taking revenge on past enemies and finding her husband
Harry, with Big Tom and Roy-Boy by her side.

From Marvel this week, Darth Vader is back! In
a new series written by Charles Soule with art by Guiseppe Camuncoli. The most fearsome
villain of all time returns with an all-new series! When Anakin Skywalker fell,
both to the pull of the dark side and to the blade of Obi-Wan Kenobi, he rose
back up, more machine than man. Having lost everything that was once dear to
him, the former chosen one must take his first steps into a darker world…as
Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith! Join Vader as he learns a new way – the way
of Darth Sidious and his newly formed Empire…the way of the dark side.

From Aftershock this week, all star
writer Donny Cates has a new series taking off with Babyteeth #1 with art by
Garry Brown. Sadie Ritter is
sixteen years old, nine months pregnant, and scared out of her sweet nerdy
mind. Having a baby that young is tough, but with the support of her loving
family behind her, everything should be okay. OH YEAH, and also her baby is the
antichrist and it’s going to break open the barriers between the earthly and
demonic planes and unleash eternal suffering to all of humankind. Other than
that, though…should be fine.

Lastly from Boom! Studios this week a
new 4 issue mini-series launches from Cullen Bunn with art by Jack Cole called
Unsound. Ashli’s first day as
a nurse at Wiermont Psychiatric Hospital turns into a nightmare as a bloody
riot sends her fleeing into the bowels of the hospital. Her descent takes her
to a hellish world populated by lunatics and monsters, cloaked in a secret
history of black magic and heinous scientific experiments.
