Oh man is it good to not have so much shit going on that I can’t get to these articles. Sitting in front of the computer to get a chance to write about the things that I love sounds like an excellent way to spend my lunch break at work so with no further ado here are some things that are On The Horizon

TV

Holy fuck yes! While Defenders was a bit of a dud, and I still haven’t gotten around to watching The Punisher or season two of Jessica Jones, I’ll tell you right now that on June 22 when season two of Luke Cage drops I will be smoking a bowl setting up some snacks and watching the shit out of this. The more I think on it the more I feel like this is my favorite of all of the Marvel Netflix show and I can’t wait. I hope the music, action and story are just as good as they were in the first season. Speaking of music, do yourself a favor and find the Luke Cage playlist on Spotify. Comics

In August Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins, the Eisner Nominated team behind Grass Kings will be coming out with a new title called Black Badge. Black Badge revolves around a covert and elite boy scout troop tasked by the government with going on actual covert scouting missions:

“I’m super excited to be teaming with Tyler and Hilary on a new project after the amazing run we had on Grass Kings,” said Matt Kindt. “BLACK BADGE is an idea I’d had for a long time — ‘Boy Scouts — but for real.’ Sending them on real scouting missions and into danger. It’s an idea that started out as a joke with me complaining about how the scouts never really scout. But now that I’m writing the series — I’m realizing the deeper and (sometimes) horrible consequences of sending these kids out on missions. It’s going to be funny, emotional, and horrific — sometimes all on one page.”

“Well, truthfully, I can’t even find words to express my happiness at working with Matt again,” said Tyler Jenkins. “And this new series, BLACK BADGE, is another vehicle for us to tackle subjects and ideas that mean something to us. After the unrelenting darkness of Grass Kings, I am very excited to explore a completely different world…a world with a tad more levity. This is going to be an adventure. A wild adventure. But it’s gonna get real, so hang on!”

Black Badge starts coming out in August from Boom! Studios and will be available from your local comic shop, including Hall of Justice Comics and Collectibles in Parker, CO.

Shadowman #1 – Andy Diggle w., Stephen Segovia a. – Valiant Entertainment
The latest incarnation of Shadowman is coming out this week and I got the chance to check it out a little early. If you are a fan of the Shadowman series I’m thinking that you will enjoy this foray into the series too. This series picks up with Jack Boniface returning from five years of exile from the Deadside. Jack is looking for answers and when he turns to the spirit world and Baron Samedi responds.
With Andy Diggle at the helm this first issue is a great jumping off point for people new to the title, while also building on the previous volume of Shadowman. It will be interesting to see where he takes it from here, but the drama is already at one hundred in issue one. Action and drama punctuated by art from Stephen Segovia.
I love this kind of supernatural action, Shadowman is one of the books from Valiant that I loved even back in the 90’s. Do yourself a favor and give this one a shot. Comes out this week.

Star Trek: The Next Generation – Scott and David Tipton w., Tony Shasteen a. – IDW Comics
It looks like a new iteration of Star Trek TNG is coming to IDW. The publisher says:
“This six-issue miniseries reveals unique, focused stories where beloved characters find themselves in new, unfamiliar situations, in a format echoing the “done-in-one” nature of the television series. However, each issue also features a subtle throughline of an evil Mirror Universe crewmember established in theMiror Broken and Through the Mirror series remaining on the ship, wreaking havoc while posing as his prime universe counterpart. Assembling a dream team of Star Trek talent, writers on the previous two Mirror Universe series Scott Tipton and David Tipton (Star Trek/Doctor Who: Assimilation Squared, Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever, Star Trek/Planet of the Apes: The Primate Directive) will be joined by artist Tony Shasteen (Star Trek, Star Trek: Boldly Go, Star Trek: Discovery Light of Kahless).

This epic team-up of Scott and David Tipton plus artist Tony Shasteen is a true all-star roster of Star Trek comics talent,” said Editor Sarah Gaydos.

“As much as I love all iterations of Star Trek, getting to write for The Next Generation always feels like coming home. And getting to continue the work we’ve been doing with the Mirror Universe is an unexpected bonus,” said Co-writer Scott Tipton.

“We hope to bring Trek fans brand-new TNG tales that feel like episodes they somehow missed on television, along with a few shocking surprises!” agreed Co-writer David Tipton.

The voice of change is often the voice of youth, and we are seeing that today. In the wake of recent (and persistent) school shootings the voice of middle and high school aged kids is being heard in the form of class walk outs and demonstrations. So the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and the National Coalition Against Censorship have joined forces to help young people navigate the perilous legal waters of protest:
“As millions of American students assert their First Amendment rights in protests across the country, advocacy groups Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and National Coalition Against Censorship today released a new comic book to help protect students’ rights. Be Heard! is a free comic by cartoonist Kai Texel that outlines best practices to help kids assert their rights to speech, protest, assembly and petition, warns about risks, and provides resources to get more help. Be Heard! is available for free from CBLDF & NCAC, who encourage readers to share it freely and broadly in advance of the National School Walkout on March 14, the March for Our Lives on March 24 and local protests across the country.
Judy Blume, a member of the NCAC Board of Directors says, “This comic book feels just right. It’s so important to support and encourage kids on issues that affect their own lives and their country.”
Neil Gaiman, who co-chairs CBLDF’s advisory board notes, “In the US, freedom of speech is paramount. The First Amendment states that you can’t be arrested for saying things the government doesn’t like. It’s important that students everywhere know that they have the right to be heard. This comic will help provide them with practical tools to raise their voice.”
Gene Luen Yang, whose distinctions include recognition as a MacArthur Fellow, the fifth National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature and author of graphic novels including American Born Chinese says, “A Chinese poet once described free expression as the mother of truth.  In our age of fake news, speaking truth to power is more important than ever. This comic is a valuable guide that teaches students how to ensure their truth is heard.”   
“Whether students choose to participate in this national movement or not, whether they walk out into the hallway or march to their Senator’s office, whether they wear orange or write an op-ed for the school paper, this moment is the ultimate First Amendment lesson,” said Abena Hutchful, coordinator of NCAC’s Youth Free Expression Program and Kids’ Right to Read Project. “We hope that teachers will engage with their students in productive ways and we want to make sure that students know what is–and is not–protected protest speech in schools.”
