New Comics for September 19th 2018

New Comics Release for 9/19/18

Some really cool stuff coming out this week! A new format Batman title, the Return of snikt! Its too damn hot to be September in Colorado, so lets jump into the cool comics that are hitting the shelves at your Local Comic Shop this Wednesday!

From Boom! Studios this week, a new Go Go Power Rangers One Shot called Back to School hits the racks. It’s Spring Break for the Rangers, and the first time since they received their Power Coins that the Rangers will be apart. As they each embark on their own week-long vacation, these teenagers with attitude discover that being a hero doesn’t always mean having to morph!

From DC this week, Black Label begins! Batman Damned #1 lands this week and is the launch title for the new imprint at DC. The Joker is dead. There is no doubt about that. But whether Batman finally snapped his scrawny neck or some other sinister force in Gotham City did the deed is still a mystery. Problem is, Batman can’t remember… and the more he digs into this labyrinthine case, the more his mind starts to doubt everything he’s uncovering. So who better to set him straight than… John Constantine? Problem with that is as much as John loves a good mystery, he loves messing with people’s heads even more. So with John’s “help,” the pair will delve into the sordid underbelly of Gotham as they race toward the mind-blowing truth of who murdered The Joker. BATMAN: DAMNED is a bimonthly super-natural horror story told by two of comics’ greatest modern creators-a visceral thrill-ride that proudly puts the “black” in BLACK LABEL.

Also from DC this week, Harley Hits #50! In a special anniversary story, “Harley Saves the Universe!”-no kidding! While reading a mysterious Harley Quinn comic book, H.Q. accidentally breaks all of reality. And you know the saying: if you break it, you bought it! Now it’s up to Harley to travel through both time and space to fix all the continuity errors she created. Luckily, she’ll have a little help, ‘cuz riding shotgun is none other than special guest star Jonni DC, Continuity Cop! Good thing, too, because if Harley fails, it means her own mom will be lost forever. Gulp! That doesn’t sound very funny!

From Marvel this week, lots of Annuals for brand new titles! Amazing Spider Man Annual #1 lands this week, and has a throwback black suit story. ears ago, Spider-Man came back from an alien world with a fantastic new costume – one he eventually learned was a living alien symbiote looking to bond with him permanently! But before he rejected the costume that went on to become VENOM, many a night the symbiote would creep onto Peter, and unbeknownst to its host, take them out into the night! Now, for the first time, see just what the symbiote steered Peter into during these mysterious nighttime excursions!

This week also sees the start of the Infinity Warps, with Soldier Supreme #1! Classified 4-F by the military, Stephen Rogers was unable to serve his country in World War II…until a secret government program tapping into arcane sorcery transformed him into the Soldier Supreme, the magical warrior embodiment of the American spirit!

Lastly this week from Marvel, Return of Wolverine #1 hits the stands. He died. Stayed dead for awhile. Then mysteriously appeared, with an infinity stone in his possession. Then the heroes of the Marvel Universe went on a Hunt for him, but now, hes back, bub!

From AfterShock this week a new series debuts called Patience Conviction Revenge #1 written by Patrick Kindlon with art by Marco Ferrari. Disregarded, disrespected and dismissed, Renny has a chip on his shoulder. Once an equal partner in a criminal syndicate that rules Las Vegas, he now finds himself living in a shack in the desert. But the shack has a workshop, and Renny’s been busy. It’s time to march his robot army into the neon hell of a cyberpunk Vegas and retake his seat at the table. Or take the wood from the table and build enough caskets for the whole syndicate. Old friends better run, because Operation PATIENCE! CONVICTION! REVENGE! is underway.

DC Universe – Post Comic Con International

So there is currently a massive marketing blitz for DC’s new product DC Universe.  With trailers coming out at Comic Con International San Diego and constant Facebook ads, but what does your $75 a year really get you?  Let’s dig into what we know about DC Universe.

-TV-

Probably the biggest selling point that they are pushing is access to exclusive new television content.  With five featured shows in the DC Universe trailer including three that are are slated for live action and two that are animated.

Titans had its trailer released at SDCC (the now infamous “Fuck Batman” trailer).  Showing us a dark and gritty DC world that we have come to know from the movies and in a lot of ways the CW shows.  This could go either way as far as entertainment goes. Will it lean too heavily on violence and language than story?  Only time will tell.

Grant Morrison’s version of the Doom Patrol seems like the natural choice for source material for the proposed Doom Patrol show.  If you aren’t familiar with this IP than you are in for a treat. This strange group of Super Hero/Trauma Victims had a fantastic run under Morrison, and is currently enjoying a great run under Eisner winner Gerard Way.  Do yourself a favor and check it out, because that will get you excited for what a show can be.

The big question mark is the live action Swamp Thing series.  Very little has been said about this, and it could end up being anywhere between “horrible beyond belief” and “the best show of all time”.  James Wan (writer of Saw, and executive producer on Aquaman) is attached to the project and that is positive. Also attached to the show are writers Gary Dauberman (writer on It and Annabelle) and Mark Verheiden (writer and executive producer on Ash vs. Evil Dead, Daredevil and Constantine).  They have stacked this with some horror and comic heavyweights so this has the stink of good on it. It also isn’t lost in translation that Verheiden was a writer and executive producer on Constantine which could make for a great through line to relaunching Constantine on DC Universe.

Young Justice Outsiders and Harley Quinn are the two announced animated shows.  Young Justice Outsiders is going to be starting on the third season of the very popular show.  Where Harley Quinn will be a new animated show. Curious to see if this will be stylistically more like the animated series that the character was born from, or the newer version that has been presented over the last few years.

On top of the exclusive new shows they will also be streaming a lot of their classic content which could have and incredibly wide range.  I could have anything from a rebooted Powerless to bingeable streams of Batman 66 or Smallville. There is a lot of DC content out there and that is without even looking at the slate of CW shows.

-Movies-

So far the announcements for movies have revolved around the available DC content from the past.  Everything from the fantastic animated movies that have been coming out over the last few years, to the original Batman and Superman films.  There is a lot that they can draw on for this segment of the service.

It will be interesting to see what they do with newer properties like the latest of the super hero films to come out in the theatre.  Will they begin to have exclusive DC Universe releases? Will there be early streaming access for users? There hasn’t been much information about this other than the clips that are included in trailers for the service.

-Comics-

There will also be a comics aspect to the service.  Claiming that this will be a “curated” list of some of the best that DC has to offer, on demand to your device.  By creating this segment the service becomes something more than just another streaming service. Much of the push has been to cross platform and cross reference content.  Read a Batman comic on your phone or tablet, then watch the movie or animated show that was inspired by the run of comics that you just read. This is a really interesting idea and it seems like it could be a really great way to convert the eyes that see video content into eyes that read comic books.

-Merch/Social Media-

So the platform is also slated to have some interesting aspects to it that no other streaming platform has ever really included.  Access to exclusive merchandise, a social media platform that gives you direct access to DC creators and the chance to earn exclusives and prizes.  This rounds out what the DC Universe can be, but will it be to much? These have the potential to be the lurking place of super fans that constantly neg the service they are paying for (looking at you WWE Network), or it could be a really interesting new take on what a media company can do with their properties.

For the price of $7.99 a month or $75 a year this is on the same price point as streaming services like Hulu or Netflix.  Will it be able to produce the same level or amount of content? Will this be worth it for casual DC fans or will this only be for the mega fan?  What happens when Marvel announces its service?

There are a lot of questions going into the DC Universe but they are taking pre-orders right now at the DC Universe page!

New Comics for April 17th 2018

Man the hits just keep on coming! Another gigantic week lands this Wednesday with some pretty amazing books, so rather than wax poetically about what may come, lets jump right in with a preview of the coolest things to tantalize your eyes!

From Boom! Studios this week, the Shattered Grid crossover event continues in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #26. After the shocking events of the last issue, Lord Drakkon’s victory seems assured-unless the Rangers can find a way to team up with another team of Power Rangers they’ve never met before!

From Dark Horse this week, Jeff Lemire’s breakout hit Black Hammer is back with Age of Doom #1. Picking up immediately where we left off-Lucy Weber has become the new Black Hammer and right as she’s about to reveal to our heroes how they got stuck on the farm and can escape she vanishes. Now our new Black Hammer finds herself trapped in a gritty world filled with punk rock detectives, emo gods, anthropomorphic humans, absurdist heroes, and many more weirdoes, in a mad world in which there is no escape!

From DC this week, its finally here! The Milestone of Milestones. Without which, we wouldn’t even be here! Action Comics #1000 debuts this week, 80 years after issue #1. This 80 page issue ships with 10 different covers and with an all-star lineup of top talent as they pay tribute to the comic that started it all! From today’s explosive action to a previously unpublished tale illustrated by the legendary Curt Swan to the Man of Tomorrow’s future-this very special, oversized issue presents the best of the best in Superman stories!

Also this week, OLD LADY HARLEY! Harley Quinn #42 features a new story arc written by Frank Tieri with art by Mauricet. In this far-flung future tale, Harley returns home thirty years after leaving Coney Island — or, more accurately, she’s DRAGGED home — to deal with the mess that the Gangs of Harley have made in her absence! Her disciples have all splintered into warring tribes, and they’ve torn down what’s left of ravaged, mutated New York City in the process!

From Marvel this week, Red Goblin drama continues in Amazing Spider Man #799. After the events of issue #798 and the debut of Norman Osborn and the Carnage symbiote as Red Goblin, SPIDER-MAN will need to the help of friend and foe alike. The mystery of the RED GOBLIN is finally revealed, and it’s not going to be pretty for Peter Parker!

Also this week, X-Men Gold #26 begins the lead in to the wedding of Kitty Pryde and Colossus! But WHO is tying the knot? And can I bring a plus-one? The X-MEN in their final confrontation with an old foe, a fight that ends up costing RACHEL everything. Plus… The evil alliance you never expected.

From AfterShock this week, Her Infernal Descent #1 hits the shelves written by Lonnie Nadler and Zac Thompson with art by Kyle Charles. A tale of loss told in five parts. Any good mom would march through the inferno of HELL to get her family back. Unable to cope with the burden of grief, a middle-aged mom descends the nine circles of hell to retrieve her forsaken family. Guided by the ghosts of William Blake and Agatha Christie, this no-nonsense mother journeys deep into a bizarre underworld filled with celebrity sinners, surreal landscapes, and absurd tasks. Her Infernal Descent is a retelling of Dante’s Inferno that updates the themes for a modern audience.

Comics Release for April 5th 2017

New Comics Release for 4/5/17

So Ghost in the Shell came out this last
weekend. Anyone see it? Was it good? Haven’t heard much hubbub about it either
positive or negative, so I guess that’s a good thing right? Anyhow, here we are
into the first week of April, and some big releases coming down the pipeline
this week, so lets jump right into it!
From DC this week, Harley Quinn #17 hits
stands and starts a new story arc called “Deadly Sin”. The twisted Harley
Sinn’s been released from prison, and she’s looking to hurt Harley in a whole
new way…by going after somebody she loved and lost! And to make this issue
extra-unmissable, a brand-new backup story begins, set in Harley’s earliest
days with the Joker-and co-written by one of Harley’s original creators, Paul
Dini! “Harley Loves Joker” kicks off as Harley makes the biggest
mistake of her burgeoning criminal career…accidentally revealing the location
of Mistah J’s hideout!

From Image this week we get two new series
starting off, Black Cloud and Rock Candy Mountain. In Black Cloud, Zelda was born in a
world of dreams, and hers burned bigger than anyone had ever seen. Now
she’s on the run in our world, the dreams broken in her hands. But the
pieces are for sale, the rich and the powerful are buying, and suddenly her
world isn’t the only place Zelda’s running from. In Rock Candy Mountain,
enter the magical world of hobos. The world’s toughest hobo is searching
through post-World War II America for the mythological Rock Candy Mountain, and
he’s going to have to fight his way to get there. Lots of hobo fights. So many
hobo fights. A new
action-comedy series full of high action, epic stakes, magic, friendships,
trains, punching, kicking, joking, a ton of hobo nonsense, and the Literal
Devil. Yeah. The Literal Devil.

From Marvel this week, lots of new #1 hitting
the stands including the Roge One Adaptation, Royals (the new Inhumans ongoing
series), and X-Men Gold #1! Out of IvX
stems a new series and new team! Xavier’s dream comes
full circle as KITTY PRYDE takes the reins and assembles a squad of the most
iconic X-Men to fight at her side. STORM. COLOSSUS. NIGHTCRAWLER. OLD MAN
LOGAN. PRESTIGE. They are X-MEN GOLD! And they’re on a mission to be Earth’s
finest heroes, even when that means defending those who hate and fear them.

Lastly from Aftershock this week, Elenaor and
the Egret #1 hits racks, a new series by John Layman (Chew) and Sam Keith (The
Maxx). The most daring art
thief in Paris has struck again, and the police have assigned their best
detective to the case. His only clue? A single white feather left at the scene.
Could this feather belong to the thief? To the thief’s accomplice, an oversized
talking egret? Or will his investigation lead him to somewhere even stranger?
(Answer: all of the above.) Presenting a peculiar and unforgettable tale of
birds and banditry, paintings and pets, larceny, love and… lamprey-wielding
assassins?
