On the Horizon – Black Badge/Luke Cage

On The Horizon

Week to week we receive emails from comic book companies and other pop culture venues. Taking those we present you with the things that we think will be the most interesting to you the listeners. If you have any news or announcements that you would like to share with Thinking Outside the Longbox shoot us an email at: outsidethelongbox@gmail.com

Oh man is it good to not have so much shit going on that I can’t get to these articles. Sitting in front of the computer to get a chance to write about the things that I love sounds like an excellent way to spend my lunch break at work so with no further ado here are some things that are On The Horizon

TV

Holy fuck yes! While Defenders was a bit of a dud, and I still haven’t gotten around to watching The Punisher or season two of Jessica Jones, I’ll tell you right now that on June 22 when season two of Luke Cage drops I will be smoking a bowl setting up some snacks and watching the shit out of this. The more I think on it the more I feel like this is my favorite of all of the Marvel Netflix show and I can’t wait. I hope the music, action and story are just as good as they were in the first season. Speaking of music, do yourself a favor and find the Luke Cage playlist on Spotify. You know what, fuck that, here it is (https://open.spotify.com/user/g0u1d1e1/playlist/6CdBcKJ5vXXkWJfmC45kqB).

Comics

In August Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins, the Eisner Nominated team behind Grass Kings will be coming out with a new title called Black Badge. Black Badge revolves around a covert and elite boy scout troop tasked by the government with going on actual covert scouting missions:

“I’m super excited to be teaming with Tyler and Hilary on a new project after the amazing run we had on Grass Kings,” said Matt Kindt. “BLACK BADGE is an idea I’d had for a long time — ‘Boy Scouts — but for real.’ Sending them on real scouting missions and into danger. It’s an idea that started out as a joke with me complaining about how the scouts never really scout. But now that I’m writing the series — I’m realizing the deeper and (sometimes) horrible consequences of sending these kids out on missions. It’s going to be funny, emotional, and horrific — sometimes all on one page.”

“Well, truthfully, I can’t even find words to express my happiness at working with Matt again,” said Tyler Jenkins. “And this new series, BLACK BADGE, is another vehicle for us to tackle subjects and ideas that mean something to us. After the unrelenting darkness of Grass Kings, I am very excited to explore a completely different world…a world with a tad more levity. This is going to be an adventure. A wild adventure. But it’s gonna get real, so hang on!”

Black Badge starts coming out in August from Boom! Studios and will be available from your local comic shop, including Hall of Justice Comics and Collectibles in Parker, CO.

Floppy Copy – Mind MGMT

What up, and TGIF Mother Fuckers? The weeks go by so fast, and I be missing my babies, and

remember childrenz a Floppy a day keeps SnowFlame at bay! “Cocaine’s a hell of a drug!”
SnowFlame the Cocaine Snorting Super bad Created by non-other than Steve Englehart himself, you know the creator of such Memorable Characters as Kilowog or Star-Lord, ahh if at first you don’t succeed. Dude literally sold the concept of Cocaine making you cooler and stronger to young children… In the late 80’s… Da Fug?
Honestly thought this is the Justice League movie I’m dying to see! Wonder Woman all Cracked out on the corner, Flash shacking so bad he’s passing through walls and shit. Batman with his

pimp hand strong you know lighten up that DC Drudgery a bit. This Week on Floppy Copy I wanted to jump back into one of my all time favorite series Mind MGMT, Writer, artist, and creator Matt Kindt really blew me away with this title in 2013 and as I give it another read here, its not hard to remember why. Volume 1 contains issues 0-6 and in Hard Copy you can pick this book up for around twenty bucks or less on eBay. Or from your local Comic Book store… Jon has one of those. (Hall of Justice Comics and Collectibles.) You may want to call first though not sure he keeps Mind MGMT in stock.
If you enjoy True Crime, Corrupt Government Organizations, Mental Powers, and Secret Agent like shit then this book may just be right up your alley, Follow main Character Meru, as she struggles to unravel the truth in her search for the missing passenger of Amnesia Flight 815. A True Crime writer by profession Meru down on her luck and 2 years removed from her last best seller unravels a world of Spies, Secret Government Organizations and a former top agent Lyme as she finds what she’s looking for a-la Matrix 2 like curve ball to wrap up the arc.
“Hope, it is the quintessential human delusion, simultaneously the source of your greatest strength, and your greatest weakness.”
Mind MGMT issues 0-6 is written in such a way that if you want to dive deeper into the world you most certainly can but if you just want a quick read and new universe to explore Volume 1 will serve you just fine in that capacity as well.
So do me a favor, just read this book! and then let me know what you think. The art does throw some people, but personally i love that rough water color look, but Don’t take my word for it, 4 out of 5  MARTHAS couldn’t agree more!

NEW Comics March 22nd 2017

New
Comics Release for 3/22/17

Well I am writing this up on Wednesday
morning, so I am obviously behind, so lets jump right in, shall we?
From Dark Horse this week, Black Hammer is
back after a few months off, with issue #7 hitting stands this week. This issue
focuses on Joe
Weber: the Black Hammer. A hero from the Spiral Slums. A husband. A father.
Gone without a trace. A visitor from the outside world arrives on the farm,
looking for the Black Hammer and bringing news of Spiral City to its Golden Age
heroes. Her arrival stirs up old memories and awakens new hope in the marooned
heroes.

From DC this week, lots of 4 issue story arcs
are wrapping up in some of the more popular titles, including Action Comics
#976 which is the finale to the “Superman Reborn” story arc. Written by Dan
Jurgens with art by Doug Mahnke and Jamie Mendoza this finale promises that
Superman’s life will be drastically changed, and you wont want to miss it!

From Image this week a new monthy horror
series called Underwinter begins with issue #1 and is written and drawn by Ray
Fawkes. In this premier Underwinter paints twisted portraits of our dark world
beginning with the perverse, topical “Symphony” – a beautifully painted tale of
music and cruelty in the modern age.

From Marvel this week, hot off the heels of
the Netflix debut, Iron Fist #1 hits the stands. Written by Ed Brisson with art
by Mike Perkins, “The Gauntlet” starts here! Kun Lun is in ruins. The chi
fueling Danny’s fists is wavering. Is there a future for Iron Fist? Danny Rand
pushes himself to the breaking point, finding fights to prove his worth. But a
bigger fight than he can handle may have found him.

Lastly
from Valiant this week, X-O Manowar #1 hits stands. Written by Matt Kindt with
art by Tomas Giorello. Born
under the oppressive thumb of the Roman Empire, Aric of Dacia learned warfare
at an early age. It was amid such violence that he was abducted by an alien
race. Forced into slavery, he survived where others perished. His escape would
come from bonding with a weapon of immeasurable power: the X-O Manowar armor.
With it, he returned to Earth…only to find himself stranded in the modern
day. But that was a lifetime ago. Now, far from home on a strange and primitive
new world, Aric has begun a new life. Liberated from his past, he tends to his
crops. Free from war. Free from violence. Free from the armor. But
the machinery of death marches his way once again. Conscripted into an alien
army and thrown into an unforgiving conflict, the fury inside him finds voice
as he is forced to embrace the armor once more. With it, he will decimate
armies, topple empires and incite interplanetary warfare as he rises from
SOLDIER to GENERAL to EMPEROR to VISIGOTH. They wanted a weapon. He will give
them war!
