Crisis on Earth X

Hello everyone!! I’m 100% invested in the DC “Arrowverse.” It has it’s up’s and it’s down, just like any other show, and a lot of people give it shit for being more melodramatic than they would like, but overall, THIS is the universe that has held my interest on the DC side of things. The Justice League movie just came out, and it stands to be the least profitable movie, as part of the DCEU, behind Man of Steel! THIS Crisis on Earth X crossover gives me way more pleasure than what’s happening on the big screens for DC right now, with Wonder Woman being the exception.
Let’s get to it! Keep in mind I’m new to this reviewing business, and this is more thought, than review.

So why, other than being “friends” did all of these superheroes get together? Well this years crossover did a MUCH better job of getting this established than last years. Last year, it’s episode that was a part of the crossover, was more in line with whatever show it was attached to. The Arrow episode focused more on that show, Flash did the same, and Supergirl was barely a part of the whole event. This years crossover felt WAY more like a full on crossover, than last year, and it started with this awesome RSVP montage, which brings everyone together:

Part 1 (of 2 tonight, 4 overall) dealt mostly with the wedding of Barry and Iris. It dealt with all of the superheroes gathering, getting manicures, pedicures, and fitted for their tuxedos. We also get a little bit of that melodrama that I spoke about earlier. Alex is dealing with her recent breakup with Maggie & her subsequent one night stand with Sarah, Supergirl is dealing with the return of Mon-El who is married now, Oliver and Felicity are dealing with wanting and not wanting to get married, Barry & Iris want to get married, and Firestorm does and doesn’t want to be separated.
Pretty standard stuff, leading up to the ceremony. The only odd thing, was an overly happy caterer, who may or may not come from the future, and may or may not be the daughter of the Wests. Pretty interesting theories about that, but it seemed a little over the top to just be an Easter egg, or something subtle for a different time. I think this will pay off before the end of the crossover.
Image result for crisis on earth x caterer
This of course leads to Nazi’s kicking down the doors of the chapel:

After the words “I hate Nazi’s” are uttered, all hell breaks loose, and we jump into the first major fight sequence. A lot of back and forth between the major heroes and what look to be like the major villains this year. Just as it looks like Kara is about to go down, she catches Overgirl by surprise, and the villains retreat. This episode ends with the heroes having the upper hand, and capturing Earth X’s version of Prometheus, who is revealed to be their earth’s, Tommy Merlyn. PART 2 starts off with his interrogation, and his subsequent suicide. I do feel like they missed the boat on that one a little bit more, and figured Colin Donnell would be sticking around a little bit longer to torture good Oliver, but that didn’t happen.
The second episode dealt a lot more with who the villains were, and was built around why they are here on Earth 1. After the setup, there needs to be villain buildup, and this part of the crossover did that just fine. Turns out, the main villains of this years crossover, are doppelgangers to Supergirl and Oliver Queen, Overgirl & the Dark Archer, respectively. The third piece to this villain puzzle is Eobard Thawne, supposedly the one from Earth 1.
This episode is actually a little more simple than the last. Team Arrow arrives, but are easily dispatched by the Dark Archer. The main heroes “find” where Overgirl’s hideout is, but they fall into a trap, and proceed to get their asses kicked. Villains gain the upper hand, and setup the “why” they are here on Earth X. The overall arch of the story of course, is that they want to dominate Earth 1. They want to make sure that the Nazi flag is hung on every earth, and this happens to be the next stop. This is what Overgirl and Thawne want. The biggest reason that the Dark Archer is there, is a little more subtle. Apparently Overgirl is dying, and they need Kara’s heart, in order to save her life. Seems like the Dark Archer wants this, more than the other, which sets up possible infighting between our villains.
The heroes are captured, and are sent to a concentration camp, on Earth X. That is where the 2 episodes for tonight will kickoff!!

I absolutely loved the first half of this years crossover. It did a spectacular job of telling the story in both episodes. Instead of focusing on the team from that episode, it focused on the story itself, which came off much stronger than last year.
There are 2 things that I still don’t understand, or annoy me.

  1. Cisco get’s knocked out at the perfect time. He is the expert at inter-dimensional travel, and he is the only hero that goes down. Alive, but not at all able to help with the mission. I don’t like when a character is taken out, simply because that makes the heroes stronger if the character is able to help. Why not come up with a different problem, instead of just knocking out Cisco. Such a weird thing to employ
  2. I have seen Thawne dye, a couple of times now. If there is anything bad to say about the Arrowverse, it’s that they rely way to much on characters we’ve already seen, and sometimes killed. Damien Darhk, Malcolm Merlyn, Thawne, etc. It’s time to stop relying on villains we’ve seen before, and start creating new ones. THIS is the reason that the current season of The Flash is working, because The Thinker is different. Anyway, back to Thawne. They did a shit job of explaining how the hell he is even alive, let alone siding with Overgirl and the Dark Archer. I’ve seen him die twice now. Once on The Flash, and once in Legends of Tomorrow. This leads to weak villains, and the thought that nobody will ever die.

Other than those two things, for me, as I’m sure there are plenty of people who can pick apart the acting, and the styles, blah blah blah. But, other than those two things, I’m happy. It felt more like a crossover, and it’s exactly what I want out of super hero characters. It was fun, comic “booky,” action packed, and entertaining. I’m looking forward to the 2 episode finale tonight!!

underworld, they will need to become more – they will need to become DEFENDERS!

From Aftershock this week, we get the
debut of a new series written by the legendary Garth Ennis with art by Russell
Braun called Jimmy’s Bastards. Jimmy Regent,
Britain’s number one super-spy, has got it all: intrigue, adventure, a license

New Comics Release for 4/19/17

Man this week is huge. The start of two huge
story arcs from the big two, and lots of other cool things as well. Both of the
big 2 issues are finally picking at the crumbs that have been dropped for the
last year, so lets get right two it!
From Dark Horse this week, we are straying
from the norm and focusing on an Original Graphic Novel that is coming out this
week. Hellboy Into The Silent Sea Hardcover features an all-new story from Mike
Mignola with jaw dropping art from Gary Gianni. Big Red sets sail from the
wreckage of a deserted island only to cross paths with a ghost ship. Taken
captive by the phantom crew that plans to sell him to the circus, HB is dragged
along by a captain who will stop at nothing in pursuit of a powerful sea
creature!

From DC this week, Batman #21 hits stands, and
is written by Tom King with art by Jason Fabok. “THE
BUTTON” part one! The cataclysmic events of DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH #1
continue here! The Dark Knight and The Fastest Man Alive, the two greatest
detectives on any world, unite to explore the mystery behind a certain
blood-stained smiley button embedded in the Batcave wall. What starts as a
simple investigation turns deadly when the secrets of the button prove
irresistible to an unwelcome third party-and it’s not who anyone suspects! It’s
a mystery woven through time, and the ticking clock starts here!

From Image this week two new series fire up
including Redneck #1 written by Donny Cates (God Country) with art by Lisandro
Estherren. This series premiere follows the Bowmans. Vampires who have quietly
run the local barbecue joint in their small town for years, living off cow’s
blood. Their peaceful coexistence ends as generations of hate, fear, and bad
blood bubble to the surface—making it impossible to separate man from monster.

Plastic #1 also hits stands this week, written
by Doug Wagner with art by Daniel Hillyard. Retired serial killer
Edwyn Stoffgruppen is in love with Virginia, a girl he “met online.”
Her affection quiets his vile urges. Together, they tour the back roads of
America in their LTD, eating doughnuts and enjoying their healthy appetites for
each other. Life is good…until a Louisiana billionaire kidnaps Virginia,
forcing Edwyn to kill again in exchange for her freedom. Oh,
and did we mention that Virginia is a sex doll?

From Marvel this week, more new #1s including
a new ongoing Monsters Unleashed series, and Nick Fury #1, But most importantly
their next major event kicks off this week with Secret Empire #0! Written by
Nick Spencer with art by Daniel Acuna and Rod Reis. What if your greatest
ally was secretly your greatest enemy? What if the most trustworthy, stalwart
hero history has ever known has been planning in secret a massive betrayal?
That time is now! The
Marvel Universe is under siege from within! Captain America, secretly a true
believer in the cause of Hydra, has turned his back on the Super Hero
community. Using the trust and respect he has gained over the years he has
ascended to a position where he can enacts Hydra’s ideals. The death of Jack
Flag, the trial of Maria Hill, the second Civil War, the alien Chitauri Queen.
All of the dominos of Captain America’s plan have been laid out — and it will
take only the slightest push to set them into action! Now, the Avengers,
the Champions, the Defenders, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the X-Men and more
will be tested. As Hydra’s grip tightens around the Marvel Universe, the heroes
stand at the precipice of an unprecedented challenge. How will they Marvel
Universe cope with this shattering betrayal by the most trusted among them?

TOTLB 050 The Rocky Mountain Gilmore Girl

totlb-916-300
ALL the way from beautiful Rocky Mountain Comic Con, we bring you the awesome 50th episode of the Thinking Outside the Long Box Podcast!! We are half way to our original goal, AND tattoo’s!!
This is the first time that we have gathered since the infamous Walking Dead premier!! We talk about the two big deaths that happen, and how that will effect the loved ones going forward! Of course, Gabe, and Jon are still not caught up! We talk bout the standalone Wonder Woman movie, and the difference between the standalone movies cramming together a team up. There are issues in the Batman movie, AND issues in The Flash movie, and that is not boding well for the behind the scenes DC universe.
We have two AMAZING interviews for this show!! The first interview that you will hear comes from the hilarious Aris Alvarado!! Aris has done MANY different TV shows, and movies, but his most well known role has to be that of Caesar, in the Gilmore Girls TV show! He tells us the story of how he got the part of Caesar, when originally he was supposed to be a foreign exchange student!! We talk about so many other stories, and we also touch on the revival, which he is in as well!! The best thing about this interview is Aris is so upbeat, and has so much positive energy! The interview made our day, because he was such a humble dude!! This is what I hope for all actors to be like! Don’t miss him, and the revival when it comes out on Thanksgiving!!
Our next interview comes from the creative team of Quince, from Fanbase Press! This comic book tells the story of a young lady, on the verge of her quinceanera, who also learns that she has gained super powers!! She has to navigate through a teenage life, at the same time as navigating through her newfound super powers! It’s hard enough being a teenager……..Listening to Kit, Emma, and Sebastian talk about this book is inspiring!! They talk about diversity in comics, and just in general, and how important that issue is! This comic book will also be available for sale in spanish, which is something different, and very important for a book like this! This team works perfect together, and you can definitely tell that they have a passion for each other, and a passion for what they do!!
We also have a quick interview from Mike Grell, on the show room floor! It’s a short interview, but it’s awesome. He tells us about Green Arrow, and a few other characters he had his hand in!!
For our #PopCultureClassics segment, we talk about the star packed movie, from Quentin Tarantino, From Dusk Till Dawn! Jon and Gabe tell us about some of the first times that they watched the movie, and why Jon’s wife doesn’t necessarily remember watching. It’s pretty hilarious, you don’t want to miss that! But, we also discuss the amazing star power that this movie has, and what other projects spawned after they were in this movie!! We also talk bout the plot, and how the movie is almost two seperate movies in one! This NSFW movie, is DEFINITELY a must watch if you like vampire movies!! It brings the gore, the sex, and the action that is perfect in this type of a movie!!
