S04 Harry Potter V Star Wars

The newest special episode from Tim & Doyle is all about Harry Potter VS Star Wars.

A little bit of time is devoted to Solo, and Fantastic Beasts 2, both the 10th installments in their respective franchises. Which 10th installment are the guys most excited to go out and see? The startling similarities are also discussed, as well as possibly an accidental plagiarism? Is there a Jar Jar Binks of the Harry Potter World? Plus of course, which franchise is better? I think you’ll be surprised at that answer!!

Comics Release for January 31st 2018

New Comics Release for 1/31/18

January is already over, but with one last
hurrah we get some glorious new comics on the last day of the month. Here we
go!
From Dark Horse this week, the first book from
their “Berger Books” imprint curated by Karen Berger lands this week with
Hungry Ghosts #1. On a dark, haunted
night, a Russian oligarch dares a circle of international chefs to play the
samurai game of 100 Candles-where each storyteller spins a terrifying tale of
ghosts, demons and unspeakable beings-and prays to survive the challenge.
Inspired by the Japanese Edo period game of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, Hungry
Ghosts reimagines the classic stories of yokai, yorei, and obake, all tainted
with the common thread of food. First course: With bad consequence, a ramen
chef refuses to help a beggar, and a band of pirates get more (and less) than
they were bargaining for after their encounter with a drowning woman turns
ghastly. Hungry Ghosts is cooked up by the infamous author and chef, Anthony
Bourdain and acclaimed novelist Joel Rose. Joining them this issue are stellar
artists Alberto Ponticelli and Vanesa Del Rey, with amazing color by Jose
Villarrubia, and a drop-dead cover by Paul Pope.

From DC this week, a bunch of new goodies hit
the rack including Metal #5! For new offering we have Motherlands #1 written by
Simon Spurrier with art by Rachael
Stott. In a crazed future
where unhinged technologies and interconnected parallel Earths have given rise
to a spectacular class of super-criminal, the most beloved celebrities aren’t
actors or rock stars, but the bounty hunters who traverse an exotic multiverse
in search of impossible prey! But when the spotlight-shunning, strait-laced
tracer known as Tab finds herself in an ultra-violent race for her greatest
prize yet, she’s forced to work with her greatest enemy, the only person
capable of IDing him: her own elderly, overbearing and hypercritical mother,
who was once the most fabulous and celebrated bounty hunter of them
all.

Also this week the
“New Age of Heroes” continues with Silencer #1! Written by Dan Abnett with art
by John Romita Jr. “CODE OF HONOR” part one! She’s one of the DC
Universe’s deadliest assassins…and you’ve never heard of her. Super-strong,
highly trained, armed with devastating and stealthy meta-human abilities, the
Silencer is virtually invincible. Or at least she was. After decades as
Leviathan’s chief assassin, Honor Guest put in her time and managed to get out
with her skin intact. Now she lives a normal life with a normal family in a normal
house on a normal street. But the past has come back to haunt her in the form
of her old employer and a deadly new mission…and Talia Al Ghul won’t take no
for an answer.

From IDW this week,
the Star Wars Adventures Forces of Destiny concludes with its final offering
featuring Rose and Paige from The Last Jedi.

From Marvel this week, Phoenix Resurrection concludes with issue #5. A light in the
darkness is not always welcome. Kitty
Pryde, Old Man Logan and Cyclops are leading teams of X-Men all across the
globe, chasing events connected to the Phoenix. But with teammates disappearing
and familiar enemies returning, the X-Men are fighting a losing battle. Beast
doesn’t know how or what shape it will take, but he knows they are running out
of time before the Phoenix makes its true presence known. Meanwhile, a young woman named Jean is starting to go
insane in her peaceful, suburban life. Nightmares and daydreams are spilling
over into the world and revealing cracks in her reality. Jean’s life and
everything in it may just be a facade, but made by who? And why? Jean needs to escape. The X-Men need to stop the cycle
of death the Phoenix brings. Their worlds will violently collide as Jean
searches for an opening and the X-Men fight for closure. But when they are
brought together, will the X-Men be reunited with their long-lost teammate – or
something darker?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

“An Instant Classic. This is Star Wars at it’s best!”
-Albie TOTLB.com

The Last Jedi is visually stunning. It’s very well written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper 2012). The action only slows to give you time to think and grieve when needed. With a running time of

Spoilers Below…

When walking out of the theater after hearing the John Williams score over the credits, there was a lot to process. Character Arcs have begun, others have progressed and a big one has ended. Rey was still the star of the film, but this episode belongs to Mark Hamill.
The people and Droids we love are back. C-3PO and R2 have their moments, including a touching one with Luke, but BB-8 is the one that kicks some serious ass. I think BB-9E was there just to add to merchandise maybe, we’ll see how important he is to the universe later perhaps, so I’m giving that a pass.
It was odd to see Chewie without Han although he was given more than I thought he would be this time out, including a message about veganism perhaps, but done in the cutest of ways. The Porgs are super cute, needed comic relief and the only reason my 5-year-old daughter wants to see the film.

Finn is the anchor of the film, the piece that ties everything together, and also has his bit of adventure and, shall we say sparks with Rose Tico, played by the amazing breakout star Kelly Marie Tran. A Lower Decks type that gets pulled into the main action and is integral to the survival of the Rebels. I wasn’t expecting her arc to go the way it did, but I was so satisfied as it unfolded.

Leia’s exit in the film combined with the real-life loss of Carrie Fisher had a lump in my throat, and tears on my face early on. It was a moment of gravitas that we were waiting for and dreading at the same time. The force is strong with her.  I was glad to see that there was no computer generated Leia this time, to my knowledge anyway, I was fooled with CGI Tarkin in Rogue One. It will be interesting how the loss will be dealt with in the next film.
Rey and Kylo Ren’s story was absolutely a middle, which is a thing that can normally hurt a part two in a trilogy, but they were given enough development, action, and twists that at one point make you want to stand and yell “Fuck Yeah!”
All I can say is Ben is a liar, he lied to Rey and I expect it to come out in Episode IX. Rey (Daisy Ridleygives this movie the heart it needs to make it more than the sum of its parts.  She has strength, beauty, and grace, a role model for us all to aspire to. Job well done.

Oscar Isaac‘s Poe shows this time out what can happen when you act without having all the information one needs. His arc, along with Finn and Rose, is integral to the if/than this of the bigger plot of the Rebellion vs The Empire, and how they may not be so different at all. This story in some ways is a mirror to our current interesting times of would-be dictators putting their ego and wants ahead of the needs of their people (cough, Supreme Leader Snoke, cough, Pussy Grabber). I have given a lot of crap to Star Wars for being hand-wavy fantasy, but the allegory here has earned, for me at least, it’s placed alongside the best Science Fiction.

Even More Spoilers Below…
For Real…

The completion of Luke’s arc was extremely satisfying and unexpected. Just the thought of us as a people experiencing this character’s life in real time, a boy in 1977, who lived in our homes and our hearts for the past four decades has come to the end of his life in much the same way as Obi-Wan did, really makes you think. For me the writing of Luke’s ending and Star Wars: The Last Jedi as a whole by Rian Johnson and the performance by Mark Hamill (Oscar material) was done so well it gives me a greater understanding of cyclical nature of life, the need for it to be so, and hope that we may all, in our own way, make a difference.
5/5 Stars

New Comics Release for May 10th 2017

New Comics Release for 5/10/17

How about that weekend huh? Highs in the 80s
on Saturday for FCBD, then crazy hail on Monday. Good ole Colorado. I hope
everyone had a great weekend and got to geek out with friends and fellow nerds
at one of the many events over the weekend. What was your favorite free comic
you picked up? This week is no slouch, with some very cool new series kicking
off, so lets jump right in!
From DC this week, we get a pause on “The
Button” as issue #22 of the Flash has been delayed a week. But fret not comic
fan, Titans #11 takes the stage this week starting another crossover called
“The Lazarus Contract”! When Deathstroke
discovers that Wally West’s return holds the key to bringing his son back from
the dead, he’ll stop at nothing to do just that! Don’t miss the debut chapter
of the epic crossover event that you’ve been waiting for! The story
continues in Deathstroke, Teen Titans, and Teen Titans Annual!

From Image this week Cullen Bunn returns to
creator owned horror in Regression #1! Adrian is plagued by
ghastly waking nightmares. To understand and possibly treat these awful
visions, Adrian reluctantly agrees to past life regression hypnotherapy. As his
consciousness is cast back through time, Adrian witnesses a scene of horrific
debauchery and diabolism. Waking, he is more unsettled than before, and with
good reason-something has followed him back. Adrian descends into a world of
occult conspiracy, mystery, reincarnation, and insanity from which there is no
escape.

From Marvel this week, the beginning of a
crossover between Star Wars and Doctor Aphra kick off with Star Wars Screaming
Citadel #1. Rebel pilot and rogue
archaeologist wander side by side into the darkest shadows of the galaxy as
Luke Skywalker reluctantly teams up with Doctor Aphra! The Doctor makes Luke an
offer he can’t afford to pass up…one that leads him to a very rare gathering
at the heart of the infamous Screaming Citadel. Will Luke find what he’s
looking for? Can Aphra be trusted? Or will they both wind up victims of the
Citadel’s Queen?

Lastly, from Boom Studios this week, an
awesome new mini series called Misfit City starts off with issue #1 and is
perfect for fans of Goonies, Stranger Things, etc! Nothing’s happened in
Wilder’s hometown since they filmed that cult kids’ adventure movie there in
the 80s…but that’s ancient history. Until one day, she and her friends come
upon a centuries-old pirate map drawn by someone named Black Mary…and find
out there might be some REAL adventure in their tiny town after all!

From the hallowed depths of Gabe’s basement, we bring you the 31st episode of the Thinking Outside the Long Box podcast!! What a great day for an early Christmas present!!
Because we couldn’t catch Jon on this episode, we have a special sit in guest!! He’s a video game expert, so we talk more video games than normal! This plus an amazing conversation about villains, and Star Wars!!
Our first interview is with Mario Candelaria who published an amazing Firefighter story called Ashes! He tells us about his inspirations to do this particular book, citing these particular people as being unsung heroes! He also tells us about how he got into comic books!! It was an interesting interview, and a good one to boot!!

Our second interview comes from Sam and Mike, who are the co-creators and the writers for The Almighties! This is a book published by Actuality Press! It is such a great spoof book on superhero teams! They will tell us hilarious stories about the different names of the characters, and why they decided to go the “spoof” route. You definitely won’t want to hear about the antics of Ms. F and the rest of the team!!
Remember, you can ALWAYS let us know what you think! We will run through our “best of” for movies, TV shows, comic books, and our favorite movie trailer of the year! Also, Jon and Gabe take their old segment back to 1994, 20 years ago! Jon tells us about Aquaman Volume 5, which brings about a very different Aquaman than most people are used to! Gabe tells us of his love for GI Joe, and the last issue that came out in 1994! AND, Juan throws in an “old shit” segment, telling us a little bit about Quantum Leap, the Quantum Leap Podcast, and a little bit more on how this podcast came to be! If you’ve never listened to Albie and the rest of the crew from the Quantum Leap Podcast, follow the link at the bottom of the page, you won’t be disappointed!
You also won’t want to miss the great interviews with The Higher Universe Comics, and Forrest Publishing! They tell us about their “superhero origin stories” as well as some of the stuff that they have out now, and will be in the works. They have MANY really cool ideas coming, so you won’t want to miss them!
The Higher Universe Comics tells us about a boy with a balloon head…………and The Misfits, a group of super heroes that might not be so super! Also Forrest Publishing tells us about Whisper, about a “gentleman” just trying to get some sleep…………. These two companies are definitely taking it to the next level, and we are all excited to see what their future brings!!
We’ve also got a BIG interview that we will announce on the 9th episode of the podcast! Trust me, you won’t want to miss this! It’s a big name in the comic book industry!
Remember, you can ALWAYS let us know what you think! We can only think of so many things to talk about every other week, and would LOVE to get some feedback and ideas from all of you out there who are listening!! You can send mp3s and email to outsidethelongbox@gmail.com. Also, join the conversations at facebook.com/thinkingoutsidethelongbox and twitter.com/outsidelongbox

The guys fill us in on Godzilla cataclysm, Birthright, and the Manhattan Project, among other things of course!! Did you see Jon’s cosplay at Denver Comic Con last year?
